Agua Volcano is an inactive volcano that rises to an elevation of 3760 m. It’s located a few minutes away from La Antigua Guatemala, which makes it a characteristic landmark visible from any part of the city. Its shape is that of a symmetrical cone covered with vegetation.
It’s name derives from a mudflow that destroyed the first Guatemala capital in 1541, when one side of the crater collapsed releasing the water inside it. As a result of this disaster, most of the city’s buildings where demolished. After the catastrophe, the capital was moved to the current La Antigua Guatemala.
Climbing Agua volcano can be challenging for beginners, but many make “Volcan de Agua” it’s first climbing experience. The trail goes into coffee and corn crops at the slopes, and a forest near the summit. At the top, the volcano offers a fantastic view of the nearby volcanoes and mountain ranges and the valleys below them. On clear days, you can even see the Pacific Coast.
The safer and easiest way to do this is with a tour operator. It’s not a good idea to go on your own, it’s always better to climb the volcano with a guide. You’ll also need enough water and healthy snacks. At the top it can get quite chilly so bring a sweater and a windproof jacket too.

Good information! Also, the best months to clime there are between November and January. You will find clear days more often then. And yes, make sure to clime in groups and with a tour operator. In Guatemala, as is the case mostly everywhere, it’s not where you go, but who you go with, and that can make a huge difference.

Also realize that there is a significant temperature drop between the base and the summit. Dress warm and bring a lot of water, the cutbacks getting up the mountain are fairly steep but easy to climb.
