Pacaya Volcano

It has become a popular tourist attraction for many who visit Guatemala due to its accessibility and its continuous activity. Many groups of tourists go to Pacaya volcano every day looking for some lava sighting and a fun adventure.

Standing at 2552 m, this volcano offers an exceptional view of Acatenango, Fuego and Agua volcanoes and the valleys bellow. The trails of the volcano are well maintained, with rest stops, trash receptacles and bathrooms. The first part of the hike takes you into humid forests in a gentle stroll. But as you get higher, the climbing becomes steep.

Near the summit you’ll find a view that resembles a lunar landscape. The hardened lava from previous eruptions surrounds the cinder cone and the crater. One last effort is to be made in order to reach the crater rim, where you might be able to see the lava flowing and sulfur clouds of smoke.

The easiest way to climb Pacaya volcano is to go with a tour operator in Antigua Guatemala, where you’ll find plenty of options to choose from. The price ranges from $15-$20 per person plus Q25 for the entrance fee to the volcano. It’s advisable to bring water, healthy snacks, a sweater and a windproof jacket.
