El Remate is a good option to stay in Petén if you’re planning on visiting Tikal. This is a small town on the shores of lake Peten Itza, 32 Km East from the island of Flores and 32 Km South of Tikal. Over the past few the years, El Remate has become a popular alternative to Flores.
Although El Remate is a little one street village, you can find quite a few hotels and restaurants that will provide some comfort. Some of these hotels give you the option of staying at a hammock instead of a bed for a lower price. No matter what your choice is, you will always get a fantastic view of the blue lake.
The water in this part of Peten Itza is still very clean, so you can take a swim freely in certain spots. A protected area called Biotopo Cerro Cahui is 2.5 km away from El Remate. The Biotopo is 700 hectares area of tropical rainforest with a 6km trail where you can admire the abundant fauna of the region, from monkeys and reptiles to all kinds of birds,
In the hotels of El Remate you will find some activities to explore the area. Night crocodile spotting, jungle or lake tours, kayak rentals and horseback riding. Staying in this town can be a relaxing adventure, but some people just stay here to be closer to Tikal.
