The small, yet beautiful town of Flores (population 13,700) is the capital of the northern department of Petén. It is located on an island in the lake Petén Itzá and connected with the city of Santa Elena by a narrow causeway. Flores is a peaceful and quiet town, with cobblestoned streets and colorful colonial-style buildings.
It’s main economic activity is tourism, so you can find nice hotels, plenty of handcraft shops all across town and a wide variety of restaurants, where you can taste the local flavors or your favorite international cuisine. You can also find cultural activities during the day and meet travelers and locals while enjoying Flores nightlife.
Flores is the starting point to several tours to the many atractions Petén has to offer, which can include a boat trip to Petencito Zoo, a visit to ARCAS wildlife rescue center or the Ak’tun Kan caves.
Perhaps the main atration for people visiting Flores is Guatemala’s mayan heritage and the worldwide famous ruins of Tikal. But there are many other archaeological sites near Flores which are worth visiting and well conservated, like El Mirador, Yaxhá, Topoxté, Nakum and Holtún just to mention a few of them. All we can say is that with so many things to do, to get bored is not an option.
