Peten is the northern area of the country; its departmental capital is Flores. The climate is hot, and in the jungle the humidity is about 90%.
The center of the mayan culture was established in Peten, where the majority of the Mayan cities were built.
Peten has a total area of 1.6 million hectares that are natural tropical forest reserve known as the Maya Biosphere. This biosphere contains 6 national parks and 3 biotopes; over 300 species of birds, and 320 species of trees. There are 320 archaeological sites with more than 11000 discovered temples.
The principal archaeological sites are: Tikal, Yaxcha, Uaxactun, Nakum, El Mirador, Piedras Negras and Ceibal.
How to get to Peten?
It takes about 10 to 12 hours by bus or car to get to Peten. There are two luxury bus companies that travel to Peten: Linea Dorada and Autobuses del Norte. The airport is 2km away from Flores and Santa Elena.
