A lovely place to visit, San Marcos La Laguna is the quintessential place to relax and to meditate. San Marcos is a small village of 2200 habitants on the North shores of lake Atitlan, and like many other villages surrounding the lake the population is mainly of indigenous origin with strong traditions and a peaceful way of living. Spanish here is a second language.
In recent years San Marcos has experienced an increase of tourists looking for a spiritual experience. There are 15 hotels and 14 restaurants amongst the verdant vegetation of San Marcos, that provide pleasant comfort and excellent food to it’s visitors. There is also a study center focused on providing meditation courses and offers yoga sessions for it’s guests.
The village of San Marcos is enclosed by an beautiful natural setting, in front of San Pedro volcano. Spiritual, massage and art courses, day trips to neighboring markets and natural attractions, hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, diving, snorkeling and swimming represent a handful of activities enjoyed by visitors.
Perhaps San Marcos La Laguna is one of Atitlan’s best kept secrets but it’s definitely a vortex that attracts people from all over the world. Getting to San Marcos requires just a motorboat 45 minute trip across the lake from the town of Panajachel.
