About Guatemala

Guatemala is a country of Central America that was once the heart of the Mayan empire and the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala – part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain – during the Colonial period. This country of extraordinary beauty borders to the North and West with Mexico, to the Northeast with Belize and the Caribbean Sea, to the Southeast with El Salvador and Honduras, and to the South with the Pacific Ocean.

Guatemala’s capital is Guatemala City. The country is organized as a constitutional democratic republic since 1985, with government periods of four years. The current president is Oscar Berger.

Guatemala has an area of 42,042 square miles, its most attractive attributes are the variety of landscape and weather, that offers the visitor different options: mountains and lakes, tropical rain forest, desert, rivers and volcanoes, as well as white sand beaches on the Caribbean Coast and black sand beaches on the Pacific shores.
