Any health risk of traveling to Guatemala may be reduced by taking the following precautionary measures:
• Take your malaria prevention medication before, during, and after travel.
• Avoid drinking any non-treated water; only drink bottled or canned water.
• Eat only thoroughly cooked food or fruits and vegetables you have peeled yourself (or from a restaurant) and avoid food from street vendors to prevent fungal and parasitic infections.
• Keep feet clean and dry and avoid going barefoot at any time.
• Don’t drink beverages with ice.
• Guatemala is in a volcanic area, therefore be aware that small earthquakes may occur.
Adequate medical care is available in Guatemala City, Antigua Guatemala, Quetzaltenango, Petén and other major cities but not at the rural area.
