Population and Language

Guatemala has a population of approximately 12 million people. In Guatemala you will find, besides a variety of Maya descendant populations, other ethnic groups such as Garifunas, as well as descendants of immigrants of Asian and European origin.

All of these groups have their own distinct traditions, language, clothing and culture. It is these characteristics and distinctions within such a small territory what gives Guatemala its varied and rich flavor, making it an unforgettable experience for any visitor.

Although the official language of Guatemala is Spanish, the State recognizes, respects and promotes the 23 indigenous languages which include the 21 Mayan languages, as well as Garifuna and Xinka.
