Ecoturism

ecoturismGuatemala is a small country with an extraordinary natural beauty and an incredible biological diversity within it’s borders. Twelve percent of its territory has been declared a World Biosphere Reserve. It’s almost incredible to believe that inside Guatemala’s 109,000 square kilometers you can find deserts, cloud forests, tropical jungles, highland plateaus, mountain ranges, active volcanoes, black sand beaches, mangrove swamps and crater lakes.

Guatemala has some of the richest biodiversity of the world with 19 ecosystems and over 300 microclimates. This makes it a perfect place to many ecotourism activities. You will be amazed just by walking inside a natural reserve boasting with lush vegetation and abundant wildlife. Guatemala has over 800 plant species, 600 bird species, 250 species of mammals, 200 species of reptiles and amphibian and numerous insects.

Perhaps one of the favorite ecotourism activities is volcano climbing. Fuego and Pacaya are very active volcanoes that bring the opportunity to watch lava rivers in a safely way. Other popular activities involve caving, whitewater rafting, organic plantation visits and excursions to pristine water natural pools and cascades. There are plenty of Natural Reserves where you can get in contact with nature in many ways.

You can even get involved as a volunteer in many wildlife conservation projects around the country. The Northern region of Peten has projects focusing on the rehabilitation and treatment of native animals while in the South beaches of Monterrico you can help the endangered sea turtles. Even if you’re not a volunteer of the project, you can sponsor a baby sea turtle and release it into the sea.

Experience ecotourism in a country that has it all.
